The Invention of the E-Cigarette

The e-cigarette is the result of an advanced application of science and a resourceful business mind. Although the first electronic cigarettes were first conceptualized all the way back in 1965, by an inventor named H.A Gilbert, it took until the year 2003 before a man named Hon Lik was able to produce a workable model (which was quickly put on the market as early as 2004).

An e-cig works like this: a small sensor detects when you draw a breath through the mouthpiece and automatically activates the atomizer, which is just a fancy name for the miniature heating coils that are hidden within the apparatus. The atomizer heats up a small cup of solution that quickly turns to vapor and is sent into the tube to be inhaled. Many solutions have nicotine in them, but the specific amount depends on the manufacturer. Some blends are nicotine free, but all types are available in an extremely wide array of flavors.

Although e-cigarettes are void of the harmful side effects produced by smoked tobacco products, an e-cig feels and tastes very much like a real cigarette and requires the same mechanical motions to consume. While tobacco products account for over 100 million deaths in the 20th century alone, e-cigarettes are safe and as yet have produced no undesirable side-effects.

Most of the flavored solutions are mainly made of propylene glycol, which is the same compound used to make smoke in smoke machines. Propylene glycol is passed quickly through the system and is non-toxic at any reasonable levels. In fact, it would nearly be impossible to ingest toxic amounts of propylene glycol in normal, everyday use. As it is an organic compound, there are already small amounts in many of the foods we eat.

The vapor that gets released from e-cigarettes is safe for everyone. With an e-cig, there’s no longer any need to feel awkward or guilty when partaking around non-smokers. In addition, with the exception of a few lone states like Washington, most laws banning smoking in public places do not apply to electronic cigarettes, so you’re free to enjoy them while in bars or coffeehouses or any other place you wish you could still smoke.

Since the liquid comes in replaceable cartridges, it’s easy to enjoy a variety of different flavors with minimal effort. As each one smokes the same as a pack of 20 cigarettes, and costs about half as much, the e-cig is a cost-effective way to cut back or even to quit smoking altogether. Many of the cartridges available for electronic cigarettes also contain a precise dose of nicotine, which can help curb cravings and abolish the often unpleasant effects of nicotine withdrawal.

With the many dangers inherent in conventional tobacco use, such as heart disease and a plethora of organ-specific cancers, more and more people are turning to e-cigarettes. It’s no wonder that electronic cigarettes are quickly becoming recognized as a safe, clean alternative to smoked tobacco products.
